Owo: FRSC organises medical outreach for drivers, target 10% traffic fatalities reduction

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Owo Unit Command says it medical outreach for drivers was to reduce the traffic fatalities and injuries to 10 per cent on highways.

Mr Joseph Kehinde Ajayi, Assistant Corps Commander (ACC), Owo Unit Commander made this known during the comprehensive public health outreach organised by the command at the Ijebu-Owo Motor Park on Thursday.

Ajayi said that the initiative was to implemented a proactive, data-driven intervention aimed at enhancing the wellbeing of commercial drivers within Owo and surrounding areas.

He explained that the intervention, which focused on the health of commercial drivers as a key factor in road safety, featured health education talks and free blood pressure/sugar screenings.

“This initiative is part of a broader strategy to combat rising traffic fatalities by addressing driver fatigue, health challenges, and mental alertness key factors in achieving the corps’ 2026 mandates.

“The health of the driver is as important as the condition of the vehicle.

“This will helping our drivers manage their blood pressure and sugar levels, we are reducing the risk of sudden health crises behind the wheel,” Ajayi said.

He, therefore, reaffirmed the unit command dedication to promoting road safety through public enlightenment, humane engagement, and community partnership, in line with the corps’ 2026 commitment to renewed professionalism.

Mr Ibrahim Hammed, Acting Chairman of Owo Local Government Area, represented by Mr Aminu O. Rasaq, who flagged off the programme commended the FRSC for taking road safety initiatives beyond enforcement and into the realm of public wellness.

Comrade Ojo Ogudu, Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Ijebu Owo Branch, appreciated the kind gesture, describing the initiative as both timely and life-saving for his members.

The Bishop of Owo Anglican Diocese, Right Rev. Stephen Fagbemi, ably represented by The Ven. Benson Ola Ajayi and the Rev. Oluwafemi Oyebode, graced the occasion and offered spiritual backing to the health initiative.

Sheikh Yunus Anoola, Chief Imam of Owo also expressed his appreciation for the FRSC’s efforts and pledged his full support for the laudable event.
