A 30-year-old man, Oforbuike Damian, has been brought before a Magistrate’s Court sitting in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, over the alleged killing of his mother.
The defendant was arraigned on a one-count charge of murder.
The prosecution, led by the Police Prosecutor and Senior State Counsel, David Njoku, told the court that the incident occurred on March 19, 2026, at Ohatekwe village in Ukawu community, Onicha Local Government Area.
Njoku alleged that the defendant fatally stabbed his mother, Mrs Onyema Damian, in the back with a knife.
He noted that the offence contravenes Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap 33, Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State, 2009.
When the charge was read, the defendant, who had no legal representation, reportedly admitted to carrying out the act, attributing it to his mother’s refusal to bathe him.
“I cannot fully explain what happened, but I recall attacking her because she refused to bathe me,” he told the court.
In his ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Chinedu Agama, ordered that the defendant be remanded in a correctional facility, stating that the court lacked the jurisdiction to try murder cases.
He subsequently directed that the case file be transferred to the Department of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.
