Germany shifts student visa processing to Lagos VFS centre

The Germany government has announced that all student visa applications in Nigeria will now be processed through a dedicated visa application centre in Lekki, Lagos.

In a statement shared via its official X handle on Tuesday, the German Embassy in Nigeria said applicants seeking study visas would no longer submit their requests directly at the consulate.

According to the embassy, prospective students will instead be scheduled to visit a visa application centre operated by VFS Global in Lekki after completing their online registration and securing an appointment.

The notice clarified that applicants would be invited to the centre—not the consulate—once an appointment had been assigned following the online process.

It advised candidates to consult the VFS Global website for comprehensive guidelines on the application procedure.

The embassy further disclosed that the new arrangement officially took effect on March 25, 2026. The launch was conducted by the Deputy Consul General, Gerald Wolf, alongside the General Manager of Operations at VFS Global, Stephen Kubasu.

The move is expected to simplify and enhance the efficiency of student visa processing for Nigerians seeking admission into German institutions.

Germany has continued to witness a steady rise in international student enrolment. Data from the German Academic Exchange Service showed that about 402,000 foreign students were enrolled in German universities during the 2024/2025 winter semester, representing a six per cent increase compared to the previous year.

Guidelines on the VFS Global platform indicate that the Lekki centre will handle document submission, biometric capture, and other related services on behalf of German diplomatic missions in Nigeria.
