A disagreement over a N25,000 debt has ended in tragedy in Ogun State, leaving a 27-year-old man dead and a suspect in police custody.
The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 37-year-old man, Opeyemi Olaniyan, for allegedly killing Ayomide Oyekunle during a late-night altercation at a beer parlour in the Agbado area of Ifo Local Government Area.
The incident, which occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, was said to have stemmed from a heated confrontation over an unpaid debt dating back to last year.
According to police authorities, the suspect had stormed the premises demanding immediate repayment but became aggressive when his demand was not promptly met.
In the ensuing chaos, Olaniyan reportedly smashed a bottle and began threatening those present.
While being restrained from entering the bar, he allegedly used the broken bottle to attack Oyekunle, inflicting injuries on his hand and abdomen.
The victim was rushed to Strong Tower Hospital in Giwa Oke Aro but was later pronounced dead while receiving treatment.
Confirming the development on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the case was reported at the Agbado Divisional Headquarters by the debtor.
He stated that the suspect had been taken into custody, while the remains of the deceased had been deposited at a morgue in Olambe for autopsy.
Babaseyi added that the matter would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Abeokuta for further investigation and possible prosecution.
