The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested a woman, Fatima Muhammed, in Maiduguri over alleged abuse of the naira following a viral social media video.
The anti-graft agency disclosed in a statement on Wednesday that the suspect was apprehended, after a video surfaced on TikTok showing her using a N500 note to clean mucus from her nose.
According to the commission, operatives of its Maiduguri Zonal Directorate tracked down and arrested the suspect within the metropolis shortly after the video gained traction online.
The agency described the act as a violation of laws prohibiting the mutilation and improper handling of the Nigerian currency.
It added that the suspect is currently in custody undergoing investigation, noting that she would be prosecuted upon the conclusion of inquiries.
The EFCC reiterated its warning against the abuse of the naira, stressing that offenders would be brought to justice in line with existing regulations.
