A senior Nigerian Army officer, Brig.-Gen. O.O. Braimah, has been reportedly killed in a midnight assault by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province insurgents on a military formation in Benesheikh, Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State.
As reported by Daily Post, the attack, said to have occurred late Wednesday night, targeted a base of the Joint Task Force, triggering intense gunfire and explosions that engulfed parts of the facility.
Security analyst Brant Philip disclosed the development in a post on Thursday, noting that multiple fire outbreaks were observed within the camp during the raid.
According to him, the slain officer was the commanding officer at the formation and one of the highest-ranking casualties recorded in recent months in the North-East insurgency.
He added that the killing marks one of the most significant losses for the military since a similar ambush in 2025 claimed the life of another senior officer in the state.
Local sources indicated that the coordinated attack extended beyond Benesheikh, with violence also reported in Pulka, Gwoza Local Government Area, where casualties were recorded among civilians, members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, security personnel, and the insurgents.
A resident of the town, Malam Lawal Benesheikh, also confirmed the incident, describing the assault as devastating and carried out by heavily armed fighters who overran the military position.
