Panic and grief have enveloped Supare-Akoko in Akoko South-West Local Government Area of Ondo State after a man, identified only as Ife, allegedly killed his mother in a brutal attack on Thursday.
The victim, said to be a health officer, was reportedly found lifeless in her residence shortly after the incident, which residents say has left the quiet community in deep shock.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that the suspect had earlier been seen with a stick in the neighbourhood, raising concerns among locals who questioned his intentions.
A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the suspect dismissed the concerns, claiming he intended to use the object for cooking.
“People noticed him carrying a stick earlier in the day and asked what he wanted to do with it, but he said he was going to use it to cook.
“Not long after, the tragic incident happened,” the source disclosed.
The source further revealed that the deceased had only returned home briefly before the attack occurred, adding that there had been previous reports of aggressive behaviour by the suspect towards his mother.
“It was gathered that the woman only came home to pick something when the attack happened. Residents also said the suspect had shown violent tendencies towards her in the past,” the source added.
When our correspondent visited the area, groups of residents were seen discussing the incident in subdued tones, reflecting the tension and sorrow that have gripped the community.
A resident who witnessed the aftermath said operatives of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, also known as Amotekun, swiftly moved in, arrested the suspect and evacuated the victim’s body.
“The Amotekun Corps responded promptly. They arrested the suspect and took away the remains. People here are still in disbelief over what happened,” the resident said.
There were also claims from locals that the suspect had a history of substance abuse, which they believe may have contributed to his alleged actions.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
