A disturbing investigation by CNN has exposed a shadowy web of online communities where men allegedly exchange strategies, materials, and guidance on how to sexually violate women, in what experts have now described as a digital “rape academy.”
The months-long probe revealed that the networks thrive across obscure websites and encrypted messaging platforms, where members reportedly discuss methods of drugging unsuspecting victims—often intimate partners—and carrying out assaults without detection.
Findings showed that some chat groups, including those hosted on Telegram, encouraged participants to share recordings of assaults while also offering advice on how to evade law enforcement. In several reported cases, victims were said to have been drugged and abused while unconscious.
The investigation further traced links between these online spaces and real-world crimes, pointing to a high-profile case in France where a man allegedly sedated his wife repeatedly and enabled others to assault her.
The case underscored how digital platforms can facilitate coordinated abuse among perpetrators.
Law enforcement agencies have since identified and prosecuted some individuals connected to the networks, with convictions secured in multiple jurisdictions. However, authorities warn that tackling the menace remains difficult due to the anonymity of users, encrypted communication channels, and the persistent underreporting of drug-related sexual crimes.
In response to the revelations, technology firms said efforts were underway to clamp down on such activities. Telegram, in a statement, reiterated that content promoting sexual violence breaches its policies and is removed once detected.
Several of the exposed groups have reportedly been taken down, though investigators say similar communities continue to resurface elsewhere.
Analysts say the report highlights a growing global threat tied to the misuse of digital platforms, with calls intensifying for stricter monitoring of encrypted services often exploited to conceal criminal operations.
