Endometriosis is a systemic condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterine cavity, causing chronic inflammation, scarring, and debilitating pain. Endometriosis remain significantly underdiagnosed in sub-Saharan Africa due to low public awareness and menstrual taboos. Globally, endometriosis affects roughly 10% (190 million) of reproductive-age women. In Nigeria, the prevalence is obscured by cultural silence and diagnostic delays. Patients in Nigeria often wait an average of 7 to 10 years for a diagnosis, frequently being misdiagnosed with pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), ‘normal’ menstrual cramps or other related conditions.

While the exact cause remains debated, ranging from retrograde menstruation to genetic predisposition, the symptoms are unmistakable. Individuals present with severe menstrual pain that stops daily activity, pain that persists outside the menstrual cycle, pain during or after intercourse, infertility affecting approximately 30-50% of women with the condition.
Findings:
🚫 82% lack basic awareness of the condition.
