Authorities in the United States have slammed federal charges against the suspect arrested in connection with the shooting incident that marred the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C.

The U.S. Attorney for Washington, Jeanine Pirro, disclosed that the defendant is facing two counts, including use of a firearm during a violent crime and assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon.

She stated that the charges stem from the attack in which a uniformed Secret Service officer was shot but survived after the bullet struck his protective vest.

Pirro said preliminary findings indicated that the suspect intended to inflict significant harm but was thwarted by security measures at the venue.

According to her, the presence of a checkpoint outside the ballroom of the Washington Hilton prevented casualties among the thousands gathered to hear Donald Trump speak at the event.

The suspect, identified by U.S. media as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California, was apprehended after reportedly advancing toward the ballroom where the high-profile gathering was taking place.

Reports by BBC and CBS News indicated that the suspect was believed to be a guest at the hotel, with his room now secured as part of ongoing investigations.

Interim Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department, Jeffery W Carroll, revealed that the suspect was heavily armed, carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives at the time of the incident.

He, however, assured the public that there was no ongoing threat, noting that additional security personnel had been deployed across the city as a precaution.

Meanwhile, U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche said the suspect would be formally arraigned soon.

Officials also confirmed that the suspect remains in police custody while receiving medical treatment at a hospital.

The shooting occurred on Saturday night during the annual dinner, attended by top government officials, journalists, and dignitaries, as investigations continue into the motive behind the attack.arges Over Shooting Scare at Washington Gala
