The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of a serving National Youth Service Corps member, Abdulsamad Jamiu, who was caught in a crossfire during an armed robbery response in Abuja.

The Guards Brigade said the incident occurred on April 25, 2026, at Shagari Estate in the Dei-Dei area, when troops on routine patrol reacted to a distress call.

According to the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Lt Olawuyi Odubola, soldiers encountered fleeing robbers and came under gunfire upon arrival.

“In the course of the exchange, the corps member was caught in the crossfire,” she said.

Odubola added that despite efforts to stabilise the situation and save lives, the victim later died from his injuries.

“He sadly succumbed to his wounds, and his death has deeply affected personnel of the Guards Brigade,” she stated.

She disclosed that an investigation had been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

“We have commenced a thorough probe and remain committed to transparency. Findings will be made public in due course,” she added.

The Army extended condolences to the family of the deceased and the NYSC, noting that his remains had been deposited at Kubwa General Hospital while urging residents to remain calm and support security agencies.
