U.S. mission warns Nigerian travellers, says visa overstays threaten future applications

The United States Mission in Nigeria has cautioned Nigerian travellers that overstaying visas could have wider consequences, potentially affecting future visa approvals for other applicants from the country.

In a statement shared via its official X handle on Monday, the Mission stressed the importance of strict compliance with U.S. immigration rules, noting that lawful travel practices remain central to maintaining fair access for genuine applicants.

It warned that when travellers overstay their visas or violate entry conditions, it may negatively influence perceptions of compliance, which could, in turn, affect decisions on future applications.

“Visa overstays by Nigerian travellers can affect opportunities for their fellow citizens,” the Mission said. “Strengthening compliance helps protect access for students, business travellers, and families who travel responsibly.”

The Mission explained that many Nigerians travel to the United States for education, business, tourism, and family-related purposes, urging applicants to adhere strictly to visa conditions throughout their stay.

It also raised concern over visa fraud and misuse of travel documents, describing them as serious violations that undermine the integrity of the system.

Members of the public with credible information on visa fraud were encouraged to report to official channels via [email protected] or [email protected].

Reaffirming its position, the Mission said it remains committed to promoting safe, legal, and orderly travel between Nigeria and the United States, while ensuring that compliant travellers are not disadvantaged by the actions of others.
