Police reject N100m bribe, bust railway vandalism ring, recover N400m materials

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have rejected a N100m bribe while dismantling a suspected railway vandalism syndicate and recovering materials valued at over N400m.

The operation, carried out by the Force Intelligence Department Special Tactical Squad, led to the arrest of two suspects, Chisom Goodnews, 32, and Ahmed Adamu, 22, in Akwanga, Nasarawa State, on April 9, 2026.

Confirming the development in a statement on Monday, the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the arrests followed credible intelligence.

He disclosed that operatives intercepted a trailer truck loaded with about 60 tonnes of vandalised railway tracks and sleepers.

According to him, the items were cleverly concealed under sacks of groundnut shells while being transported from Bauchi State to Ilorin, Kwara State, in a bid to evade detection.

“The operation led to the interception of a trailer truck conveying approximately sixty tonnes of vandalised railway tracks and sleepers.

The materials were hidden under sacks of groundnut shells,” he said.

Preliminary investigations, he added, revealed the existence of an organised network involved in the theft and distribution of critical railway infrastructure.

The police said the truck driver had been contracted for N2.5m to transport the stolen materials, pointing to a coordinated supply chain linked to buyers of vandalised assets.

On the bribery attempt, the spokesperson disclosed that operatives turned down an offer of N100m allegedly made to compromise the investigation and secure the release of the suspects and exhibits.

The Force said the trailer truck used in the operation had been recovered, while efforts were ongoing to apprehend other members of the syndicate.

Reacting, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, commended the officers for their professionalism, describing their actions as a reflection of discipline, courage, and integrity.
