Traders and customers at the popular mobile phone market in Kano were thrown into panic on Monday after suspected hoodlums stormed the area and unleashed violence.
The incident occurred at the bustling Farm Centre market, particularly around Yoyo Plaza, a section widely known for phone trading activities.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers, believed to be youths, invaded the market in broad daylight, assaulting traders and passersby while brandishing sharp weapons to intimidate victims.
During the attack, the assailants reportedly carted away mobile phones and other valuables, leaving many victims injured and properties lost.
A witness told The PUNCH that the attackers were allegedly linked to a political gathering held near the market, although there was no official confirmation of the claim.
The situation, however, was quickly brought under control following the intervention of armed police operatives, who were deployed to the scene and succeeded in dispersing the attackers before the violence escalated further.
As of the time of filing this report, no deaths had been officially confirmed, but several persons were said to have sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Efforts to reach the spokesperson for the Kano State Police Command, Abdullahi Haruna, proved unsuccessful, as calls and messages sent to his line were not responded to as of press time.
