A resident of Mittiri Village in Yobe State, Ibrahim Mittiri, has allegedly confessed to falsely accusing a local hunter of being a member of Boko Haram following a prolonged personal dispute.
The allegation reportedly led to the arrest of the hunter, identified as Aji Ibrahim, by troops attached to Sector 2 of Operation Hadin Kai.
According to security sources, the incident began on May 24 after Mittiri allegedly informed another villager, Umar Abdullahi, also known as Gajeri, that the hunter had links with the insurgent group.
The claim was subsequently relayed to military personnel, prompting the arrest of the hunter for interrogation.
However, preliminary findings by investigators reportedly revealed that the accusation stemmed from a lingering seven-year disagreement between Mittiri and the hunter, a matter said to be currently before a court.
A security analyst, Zagazola Makama, disclosed the development in a post shared on X on Thursday.
Sources said Mittiri later admitted during questioning that the allegation was fabricated and motivated by personal grievances.
He was also said to have confessed that his intention was to ensure the hunter was arrested and subjected to possible harsh treatment by security operatives.
Investigators further discovered that Mittiri and Umar Abdullahi were allegedly involved in intelligence gathering activities for local groups and had reportedly been receiving monthly stipends for their roles.
The two suspects have since been arrested and are expected to face further investigation and possible prosecution over alleged false accusations and misuse of security channels.
