A 30-year-old event decorator, Esohe Aigbe, has been brutally killed by suspected attackers in Benin City, the Edo State capital.
The incident reportedly occurred on May 27 at Ojo Street in the Ogida area of the city, where the deceased had gone to assist a friend with decoration work for a burial ceremony.
Sources familiar with the incident said Aigbe had completed the assignment and remained at the venue when she was attacked by assailants wielding a machete.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to security concerns, said the attackers fled immediately after carrying out the assault.
“The woman had gone to decorate a venue for a burial ceremony.
After the work was completed, she was still around when some individuals attacked her with a machete,” the source said.
“The attackers escaped from the scene immediately.
People nearby rushed to help and took her to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, but she later died from the severe injuries she sustained.”
The killing has thrown residents of the area into shock, with many calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident and disclosed that a suspect had already been arrested.
“I am aware of the murder case. One suspect is currently in police custody, while investigations are ongoing,” she said.
The police spokesperson, however, declined to provide further details as detectives continue efforts to unravel the motive behind the killing and identify other possible accomplices.
The incident adds to growing concerns over violent crimes in parts of the state, with residents urging security agencies to intensify efforts to protect lives and ensure perpetrators of such crimes are brought to justice.
