The military has begun efforts to secure the freedom of former Director of Defence Information, Major General Rabe Abubakar (retd.), and his wife following their abduction by suspected gunmen in Katsina State.
A senior military source confirmed the incident on Saturday, assuring that security operatives were already taking steps to locate and rescue the retired army officer and his spouse.
The source described the development as unfortunate and said the military would deploy necessary measures to ensure their safe return.
According to information shared among military veterans, the retired general and his wife were reportedly seized by armed assailants while travelling to Katsina State.
The abduction was said to have occurred along a route in Matazu Local Government Area, where the couple’s vehicle was intercepted by the attackers.
Details circulating within military circles indicated that the victims’ driver narrowly escaped the attack despite sustaining a gunshot wound during the incident.
The message further stated that the vehicle abandoned after the attack, a red Peugeot 406, was later recovered and taken to the Matazu Divisional Headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force.
Security agencies have yet to release an official statement on the abduction as of the time of filing this report.
The incident adds to growing concerns over insecurity and recurring cases of kidnapping across parts of the country, particularly in the North-West region.
