The Anambra State Government has commenced a crackdown on unregistered mortuary facilities, directing operators across the state to regularise their operations or face sanctions.
The directive was issued by the state Ministry of Health through a public notice signed by the Director of Medical Services, Dr Chukwulobelu Ugochukwu, on behalf of the Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike.
The ministry mandated all mortuary proprietors operating without official registration to immediately begin the registration process, while facilities with expired licences were instructed to renew their approvals without delay.
It also clarified that hospitals offering mortuary services must obtain separate registration for their mortuary units, irrespective of the licensing status of the hospitals themselves.
According to the ministry, the directive covers all mortuary facilities operating without proper authorisation within the state and forms part of the government’s ongoing healthcare reform initiatives aimed at strengthening regulation in the sector.
The notice stated that the exercise would enhance oversight of mortuary operations, ensure adherence to professional standards, and support public health measures, particularly during disease outbreaks and pandemics.
The ministry further noted that stricter regulation would help curb illegal practices linked to the improper handling and mutilation of corpses while promoting compliance with existing public health laws.
It explained that the state is currently updating its database of licensed mortuary facilities to improve monitoring, regulation and enforcement of public health standards.
Operators affected by the directive have been given until June 5 to complete their registration and licence renewal processes.
The ministry warned that statewide inspections and enforcement activities would begin immediately after the deadline, with defaulters and illegally operating facilities facing penalties as prescribed by law.
It also urged stakeholders in the health sector to continue supporting government efforts to improve healthcare delivery and maintain acceptable standards across the state.
