A Grade I Area Court sitting in Lugbe, Abuja, has dissolved a 13-year-old marriage between Gaminana Aminat and her husband, Musa Abdulrahab, following allegations of battery, neglect and persistent disrespect.
The court, presided over by Aliyu Kagarko, granted the divorce in accordance with Islamic law after Aminat sought the dissolution of the union, citing repeated mistreatment by her husband.
Kagarko also directed the petitioner to observe the mandatory three-month “Iddah” period before entering into another marriage.
Testifying before the court, Aminat said she married Abdulrahab under Islamic law in 2012 and that the marriage was blessed with three children.
She alleged that her husband had, over the years, subjected her to physical abuse and consistently disrespected both her and her parents.
According to her, disagreements in the home often escalated into violence, while efforts by family members to mediate were met with insults from the respondent.
The housewife told the court that several attempts by relatives from both families to resolve the crisis failed, as her husband allegedly refused to change his behaviour.
She further accused him of neglecting his responsibilities to her and their children, adding that the situation had become unbearable.
“I can no longer tolerate his behaviour, the constant beatings and the disrespect shown to me and my parents,” she told the court, insisting that she was no longer interested in continuing the marriage.
Aminat therefore urged the court to dissolve the union on grounds of alleged battery, lack of care and disrespect.
In his response, Abdulrahab did not oppose the application and consented to the dissolution of the marriage.
Following submissions from both parties, the court granted the request and formally dissolved the marriage.
