The Kebbi State Police Command has launched a manhunt for a man following the death of his wife after a shooting incident in Geza Village, Bagudo Local Government Area of the state.
The incident, which occurred on June 9, claimed the life of 25-year-old Sa’ima Sani, who reportedly sustained fatal injuries from a locally made Dane gun.
According to security sources, preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased was asked by her husband, Auwalu Hassan, to bring him the loaded firearm, which had been stored in a room within their residence.
While taking the weapon to the rear of the house where her husband was said to be waiting, the gun allegedly discharged accidentally, striking her in the stomach and left hand.
The incident was subsequently reported to the police, prompting officers from the Bagudo Divisional Police Headquarters to rush to the scene.
The victim was evacuated to the General Hospital, Bagudo, where medical personnel battled to save her life.
However, she later succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment.
Police sources disclosed that necessary procedures were carried out, including documentation of the incident, before the remains were released to the family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
The command also confirmed that efforts were ongoing to locate and apprehend the deceased’s husband, who reportedly left the area shortly after the incident.
Investigators are currently working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the shooting and determine whether negligence or any other criminal offence contributed to the tragedy.
The police urged members of the public to handle firearms responsibly and ensure that weapons are properly secured at all times to prevent avoidable loss of lives.
The command reiterated its commitment to conducting a thorough investigation into the incident and ensuring that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.
