The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a couple for allegedly subjecting a 10-year-old boy to severe physical abuse in the Awada area of Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.

The suspects, identified as Chisom Chukwukere, 30, and her husband, Chukwudi, were apprehended following allegations that they inflicted serious injuries on the child, including burns reportedly caused by melted plastic.

The arrest followed widespread outrage sparked by a viral video showing the victim with multiple injuries across his body.

Police operatives attached to the state command carried out the arrest as investigations into the incident intensified.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and Social Welfare has taken custody of the woman’s infant child as part of protective measures following the development.

Sources disclosed that during interrogation, Chisom appealed to authorities to allow her retain custody of the infant, claiming that the child was ill and required her care.

A video circulating on social media also showed her making similar pleas to officials.

The ministry, however, placed the infant in the care of a family member pending the outcome of ongoing investigations.

The case has generated widespread condemnation, with many residents expressing concern over the alleged abuse and calling for justice for the victim.

Confirming the arrests on Thursday, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the command had intensified investigations and vowed that all individuals found responsible would face prosecution.

According to him, the police remain committed to enforcing laws aimed at protecting children from abuse, neglect, exploitation and other forms of violence.

Ikenga added that the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, had reaffirmed the command’s commitment to working with relevant government agencies, child protection organisations and community stakeholders to safeguard the rights and welfare of children across the state.

He stressed that the command would continue to promote justice, compassion and respect for human rights in line with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police.
