The Abia State Police Command has arrested a man captured in a viral video allegedly assaulting a woman in Aba, following widespread public outrage over the incident.

The suspect was apprehended by operatives of the command’s Violent Crimes Response Unit after a video surfaced online showing him repeatedly striking the woman and allegedly threatening her life.

The incident reportedly occurred in the Ogbor Hill area of Aba, where the man was seen punching the woman in the face as she pleaded for mercy and sought help.

In the footage, the woman appeared distressed and attempted to shield herself from the blows while the suspect continued the assault.

Audio accompanying the video allegedly captured the man issuing threats in the Igbo language, repeatedly asking the victim if she wanted to die.

The disturbing clip triggered condemnation from members of the public and prompted swift action from security agencies.

Sources said operatives of the Violent Crimes Response Unit tracked the suspect to his location and arrested him on Saturday.

He is currently being held in police custody pending the conclusion of investigations.

Reacting to the incident, the Peoples Democratic Party candidate for Aba Central State Constituency in the 2027 election, Anastasia Odochi Uchenna, condemned the alleged assault, describing it as disturbing and unacceptable.

She called on law enforcement authorities to ensure the suspect is prosecuted if found culpable and urged the Abia State Government and relevant agencies to provide medical support for the victim.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the Abia State Police Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the arrest and disclosed that investigations into the matter were ongoing.

The police have yet to provide further details on the circumstances surrounding the incident as inquiries continues.
