Ondo raises concern over conduct of police intelligence operations

The Ondo State Government has expressed reservations over recent operations carried out by officers of the Force Intelligence Department in parts of the state, saying the exercises have generated anxiety among residents.

The government said although security agencies have a constitutional duty to tackle crime and protect citizens, such assignments should be executed in a manner that does not create fear within communities.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon. Idowu Ajanaku, the government noted that the style of the operations had unsettled many law-abiding residents.

It therefore called on the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to ensure that specialised police units strictly observe approved procedures while carrying out assignments in the state.

The government stressed the need for improved coordination between security agencies and relevant state authorities whenever intelligence-driven operations are to be conducted.

According to the statement, proper communication would help prevent misunderstandings and avoid unnecessary tension among members of the public.

While reaffirming its support for lawful efforts to combat criminality, the government maintained that security operations must be conducted professionally and with due regard for public confidence.

It assured residents of its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and urged them to remain calm as it continues discussions with security authorities on the conduct of future operations in the state.
