A video showing an injured 18-year-old woman pleading with operatives not to arrest her husband despite allegations of domestic violence has triggered widespread outrage and concern across social media platforms.
The footage, which surfaced online on Monday, showed the visibly bruised young woman alongside neighbours confronting her husband over claims of repeated physical abuse.
In one of the clips shared by an X user, identified as Hybrid_Ola, the man was seen attempting to pull the woman towards him while residents intervened and urged him to leave her alone.
During the confrontation, the man insisted that the woman was his wife and accused those around him of interfering in his marital affairs.
Bystanders, however, accused him of persistently assaulting the teenager, alleging that she had been subjected to frequent abuse since the marriage.
Another video later emerged showing the woman receiving medical attention in the company of human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu.
While discussing plans to seek legal action against the alleged abuser, the activist was met with resistance from the woman, who pleaded that her husband should not be arrested.
The young woman said she had no intention of returning to the marriage but begged authorities to allow her husband to go free.
According to her, arresting him could worsen her situation, particularly due to an alleged strained relationship with her mother-in-law.
The development has generated intense reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the teenager’s safety and questioning why she appeared reluctant to support legal action against her husband.
Responding to concerns raised on social media, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency confirmed that it had taken notice of the incident and was looking into the matter.
“We are on it. Thank you for tagging us,” the agency stated in response to a post calling for intervention.
Several social media users urged law enforcement agencies to investigate the case and ensure the young woman receives adequate protection and support.
Others expressed concern about her emotional state, noting that she appeared frightened and vulnerable in the videos.
The incident has also reignited public debate over domestic violence, child and early marriage, and the challenges authorities face when victims of abuse are unwilling to pursue complaints against their alleged abusers.
Observers say the case highlights the growing role of social media in exposing cases of alleged domestic violence and prompting swift responses from relevant agencies.
The authorities have yet to provide further details on any ongoing investigation into the incident.
