A Magistrate Court sitting in Kano has remanded a nursing mother, Jummai Ahmad, in a correctional facility over allegations surrounding the death of her newborn baby.
The defendant was arraigned before the court on charges of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide.
Chief Magistrate Haulatu Magaji Kankarofi ordered her remand after the police presented the case, directing that she remain in custody pending further proceedings.
According to the prosecution, the matter was reported to the police by the Village Head of Gama E community, where the defendant resides.
The prosecution alleged that the defendant conspired with her mother in connection with the death of the baby, who was reportedly born out of wedlock.
Police further informed the court that the second suspect, identified as the defendant’s mother, is currently on the run after allegedly fleeing the area before her arrest.
The court ordered that efforts be intensified to apprehend the fleeing suspect and ensure she is brought before the court to face the allegations.
The case was adjourned to a later date, while the defendant remains in custody awaiting the continuation of legal proceedings.
