The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has commenced an investigation into the cause of a fire that engulfed a 5 million-litre Automotive Gas Oil storage tank at the Bono Energy Terminal in the Coconut area of Apapa.

The incident, which occurred on Friday, was, however, brought under control without any casualty, following a swift response by firefighters and other emergency agencies.

The Controller of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, said the emergency was reported at about 12:04 p.m., prompting the immediate deployment of firefighters from the Ajegunle, Sari Iganmu and Isolo fire stations.

According to her, emergency responders arrived at the terminal, located within the Ibru Jetty Complex along the Apapa–Oworonshoki Expressway, at about 12:16 p.m. and found the 5 million-litre diesel storage tank engulfed in flames.

She said coordinated efforts by the state fire service and emergency teams from neighbouring oil and gas facilities led to the successful containment of the inferno by about 1:54 p.m.

Adeseye noted that the prompt intervention prevented the fire from spreading to adjoining storage tanks and other critical infrastructure within the facility, significantly reducing the risk of a major disaster.

She added that no injuries or fatalities were recorded during the incident.

“The cause of the fire is yet to be determined and is currently under investigation,” the fire service boss said.

The incident came hours after emergency responders averted another potential disaster involving a leaking Liquefied Petroleum Gas tanker at Owode Elede, inward Onirin, along Ikorodu Road.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency had disclosed that the tanker developed a fault in the early hours of Friday, but the situation was promptly brought under control without any casualty.
