The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has asked the federal government to halt its plans to reintroduce excise tax on locally produced non-alcoholic and carbonated drinks. This is as the labour union has warned that the beverage sub-sector will be losing sales revenue of about N1.9 trillion as well as Company Income Tax, VAT and Tertiary Education Tax of N197 billion as against the total projected receipts of N81 billion to government. The federal government has introduced an excise duty of N10/litre on all non-alcoholic, carbonated and sweetened beverages. Zainab Ahmed, minister of finance, budget and national planning made the announcement during a public presentation of the 2022 Appropriation Act in Abuja on Wednesday January 5. Ahmed said the excise duty was introduced in line with the Finance Act signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari on December 31, 2021. Rotimi Akeredolu, governor of Ondo, says the Nigerian Army has withdrawn its personnel from correctional centres in the state. Akeredolu, in a statement by Richard Olatunde, his chief press secretary, said the move could trigger jailbreaks across the states.
