The Supreme Court, on Friday, declared the Rivers State Local Government elections held on October 5, 2024, invalid. A five-member panel of the Supreme Court, in a judgment delivered by Justice Jamilu Tukur, ruled that the conduct of the local government polls in the state was null and void. In its decision, the apex court set aside the judgment of the Court of Appeal, which had overturned the trial court’s ruling on the grounds of lack of jurisdiction. Justice Yetunde Rukayat Pinheiro of the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja, has fixed March 7, for the hearing of all pending applications in the suit filed by former Speaker of the State House Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa. Obasa had dragged the state government and the assembly to court over what he termed as unlawful removal. The lawsuit, filed on February 14, 2025, also names the current Speaker, Lasbat Mojisola Meranda, as the defendant.
