THERE is heavy presence of security personnel at the Benin City office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) along Ramat Park. The electoral umpire had moved back to its permanent office after vacating the premises to a rented apartment along Sapele Road as a result of flooding. No fewer than 1.72 million persons are eligible to vote in the September 19, Edo governorship polls while 483,796 eligible voters will not participate. This is according to a document obtained from the Independent National Electoral Commission titled, ‘Delimitation of Edo State’. The document shows that the identified ineligible voters in Edo failed to collect their Permanent Voter Cards. The Ondo State chapter of South-West regional security outfit, Amotekun, has arrested a Fulani man, identified as Adamu Yusuf, and his 65 cows for destroying crops on some farms in the Oda area of Akure, the state capital. Some of the crops allegedly destroyed were maize, cassava and yam tubers that were reportedly worth N5m. It was gathered that the herdsman and the cows were caught in the act at night by the Amotekun corps, who reportedly moved in after the affected farmers had reported the matter. Former Minister of Finance Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has made the final shortlist of candidates for the Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The body however dropped three candidates from the contest. It also plans to reduce the contestants to two final candidates in the next few weeks.
