The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has flayed the federal government despite its efforts in combating the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

The association at a press conference in Owerri, after the end of its physical/virtual national executive council meeting and scientific conference which held in Imo State, accused the federal government of paying lips service to its welfare.

The association’s national president, Uyilawa Okhuaihesuyi, who addressed the press conference said that Nigerian doctors were suffering.

He said, “The NEC unanimously demanded that the current hazard allowance be upwardly reviewed within the two months in other to encourage our members to continue to work at this critical moment of the increasing rate of infection and mortality due to the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic and to maintain industrial harmony in the health sector.

“The NEC resolved that the group life insurance scheme for all health workers should be speedily implemented and all health workers who have been infected or died as a result of COVID-19 infection or any other infectious disease in the country be compensated.

“The NEC demands the immediate universal domestication and implementation of the MRTA 2017 by all training institutions including state-owned training institutions and ensure proper funding as stipulated by the Act.

“They urged the national officers’ committee of NARD to work closely with the relevant agencies of government to expedite the payment of the 2021 medical residency training funds in order to prevent the mistakes made in 2020.”
