Eight injured as NURTW members clash in Akure

Eight persons have been injured in clash between members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

This is coming one week after Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu suspended activities of NURTW and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) from all motor parks.

Governor Akeredolu had through his Special Adviser on Special Duties and Strategy, Dr. Doyin Odebowale, said the unions’ activities were suspended over possible clash between factions of the unions.

Among those injured in the clash were Omoniyi Oni popularly known as Eniba and Wasiu Ibrahim.

It was gathered the clash occurred at a barber’s shop at Owode area in Akure.

But Omoniyi said they were attacked by suspected thugs allegedly sponsored by chairman of the Union, Mr Jacob Adebo Idajo.

Omoniyi claimed that attackers waylaid them and attacked them with dangerous weapons.

He said they have been under attack because they opposed the style of the current leadership of NURTW.

Idajo could not be reached for comments.
