Cristiano Ronaldo makes football history with his brace against Ireland
Cristiano Ronaldo has broken the world record for the most goals scored for an international team by a single player with two goals against Republic of Ireland in the qualifier for Qatar 2022 World Cup on Wednesday.
Ronaldo, who was on tie with former Iranian international, Ali Daei’s record before the match missed a penalty in the first half but redeemed himself when he scored the equalizer and his 110th career goals for Portugal in the 89th minute from an header taking him past great Ali Daei’s record of 109 international goals.
Subsequently, the 33-year-old bagged the winning goal for Portugal in the 96th minute and his second in the game taking him to all time record of 111 goals for a country.
Ronaldo, who rejoined United from Juventus on deadline day, and Daei are the only two male players to score 90 or more international goals.
“I’m so happy, not only because I beat the record, but for the special moment that we had,” he told RTE. “Two goals at the end of the game. I have to appreciate what the team did, we believed until the end. I’m so glad”, Ronaldo said after the match.
