Prolonged ASUU strike shows lack of compassion, says Saraki

A former senate president, Dr Bukola Saraki, has said the prolonged strike embarked by the Academic Staff Union of Universities and other unions in the Nation’s universities shows the lack of compassion for Nigerians by the Federal government.

Answering questions from journalists in Ilorin, Kwara State, Saraki also said that the 2023 elections were crucial for the country and urged the people to take them seriously.

ASUU has been on strike since February 14, 2022, while other related unions have also embarked on industrial actions to press for an improved condition of service as well as an improvement in the education system in the country.

The former Kwara State governor said, “There is no way I will be part of the government as Senate President and ASUU and other unions in the Universities will go on strike for months. It is the lack of compassion and dedication. It is a matter that the government should lock itself up in a room and not come out until the matter is resolved and I have not seen that dedication. I don’t know whether you have seen it.

“That is the difference between the PDP government and what we have now. It could not have happened under former presidents (Olusegun) Obasanjo, (the late Umaru Musa) Yar’Adua, and (Goodluck) Jonathan.”
