Protesting Ibadan youths want EFCC scrapped

Hundreds of youths yesterday staged a protest calling for the scrapping of the anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The youths who marched to the frontage of the Oyo State Government Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan expressed displeasure with the conduct of the anti-great agency saying their activities have become an assault on innocent youths.

The youths arrived at the State Secretariat frontage in a convoy of over 20 vehicles with various banners wrapped around the vehicles. They also carried placards and sang solidarity song.

The protesters barricaded the entrance of the state secretariat for several hours, leading to a gridlock on Bodija, Parliament, and Total Garden roads, among others.

Some of the youths in their 20s and 30s, accused EFCC of carrying out Illegal house search and arrests.

One of the protesters who identified himself as an engineer, said “We are not asking them not to do their job, but they should do it according to the law. They collect people’s phones and search through them, what kind of thing is that?”

Another youth, Olamide Ayobami, said “When they get to a house and they meet 20 people there, they will search everybody. They come anytime of the day and don’t even show us any search warrant or authority to search our homes.”
