ASUU President: We’re yet to suspend strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has not, as of 12:30 p.m., suspended its ongoing industrial action, the union has said.

Stories and social media posts Tuesday morning suggested that the union has suspended the strike following a meeting with members of the leadership of the House of Representatives on Monday.

For the first time since 14th February when ASUU embarked on strike, it said on Monday that it saw “light at the end of the tunnel.”

However, in a short reply to enquiry on the strike, the ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke, said the union has not suspended the strike.

He described stories that his union had suspended the strike as “fake.”

Meanwhile, a source in the union confided in newsmen that there will be briefings at the various zones of the union and a subsequent meeting by the branches between today (Wednesday) and tomorrow (Thursday).

“They just left Abuja this morning, and some will be holding their Zonal meetings today and others will do it tomorrow,” the source said.

The source added that the National Executive Council of the union will then meet to decide on the suspension of the strike.

The Court of Appeal last Friday ordered ASUU to suspend the strike before continuing with its appeal against the judgement of the Industrial Court.

While ASUU has not immediately obeyed the court ruling, it has been in talks with the leadership of the House of Representatives, holding multiple meetings.

On Monday, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, disclosed that he has presented the agreements with ASUU to President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said Mr Buhari will disclose the contents of the new agreement to Nigerians.
