Okrika Clothes are Injurious to the Health of the Nation — Nigeria Customs Service

The AG Nigeria Customs Service Controller Hussein Ejibunu had recently made a strong statement on Thursday 8th of June 2023 labeling the secondhand clothings popularly known as “Okrika” as “injurious to the health of the nation.”

The AG Controller highlighted the possibility of diseases, skin infections, and allergies being transmitted through these garments. The nation stood at a crossroads, grappling with the balance between economic accessibility and public health.

He claimed that secondhand clothing is harmful to the country’s health, which is another justification for the government to deem it appropriate for banning it as no one is sure who or how it was used. Additionally, traffickers who want to use Nigeria as a garbage dump shouldn’t be tolerated.

He continued by saying that because Nigeria is endowed with both material and human resources, it is important to prevent anything from undermining those resources, such as the importation of used garments.

As the news spread, citizens found themselves caught in a heated discussion about the economic and health implications of this popular clothing trade.
