Man, 52, in court for allegedly obtaining N285,000 under false pretence

A 52-year-old man, Kehinde Abubakar, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for alleged N285,000 fraud.

The defendant, who resides at Agege, Lagos State, is being tried on two-count charges of obtaining money under false pretence and causing breach of peace.

The prosecutor, Inspector Evelyn Ehieniua, told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offences in September, 2016, at Plank Market, Ijaiye, Lagos.

Ms Ehieniua alleged that the defendant obtained N285,000 from the complainant, one Mathew Oguntade, on false pretext that he was going to construct a planner and a cutting machine for him.

The prosecutor, however, told the court that since the receipt of the cash, the defendant refused to deliver as agreed and absconded with the money.

Ms Ehieniua said that police operatives later arrested the defendant following credible information.

The offences, according to the prosecutor, contravene Sections 168 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Magistrate, M. A Adegbaye, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Mr Adegbaye adjourned the case until March 20 for mention.
