Killing of Eze Umucheke’s cabinet members: CP visits Imo community, vows to apprehend murderers

OWERRI — The Commissioner of Police, Imo State, Mr. Aboki Danjuma, has assured the general public, particularly the residents of the Umucheke Okwe Community, Onuimo local government area of the state that the command under his watch, will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the killers of Eze Umucheke’s cabinet members are all arrested and brought to justice.

Danjuma also disclosed that the command’s tactical units, in synergy with the other security agencies and the local vigilantes, are presently combing the surrounding forests in Onuimo communities for possible apprehension of the fleeing suspects.

The CP, according to the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Henry Okoye, gave the assurance, yesterday, when he paid a condolence visit to Umucheke Okwe community.

Accompanied on the visit were the Sole Administrator of Onuimo local council area, Dr. Emeka Obi, a representative of the Commander 34 Artillery Brigade, Obinze, Major AI Maikarifi, Commandant NSCDC, Mr. Mathew Ovye, and other security agencies, for an on-the-spot assessment of the heinous crime.

The PPRO said: “The CP strongly condemned the tragic killings of the innocent community chiefs, describing it as barbaric, inhumane, and a senseless act of violence.

“He commiserated with the families of the bereaved and the entire Umucheke Okwe community, over the unfortunate demise of their loved ones and vowed that their deaths would certainly not go in vain.

“The CP further assured that a detachment of the Command’s tactical unit would be stationed permanently at the Community to evade any further threat of attack until peace returns to the community.”

Mr. Okoye further disclosed that “preliminary findings revealed that the attack was perpetrated on August 3, 2024, at about 1700hrs by gunmen, suspected to be members of the proscribed IPOB/ESN, numbering about six on three motorcycles”.

He recalled that residents of the community saw the hoodlums but didn’t report them to the police or other security agencies until they perpetrated the dastardly killings and left the community.

Okoye also said that while emphasizing the need for community participation in the fight against violent crimes, the Commissioner of Police equally urged the residents of Onuimo and other communities in the State, “to continue supporting the Police and other security agencies in the State by remaining security conscious and reporting any suspicious person or activity within their vicinity to the nearest Police Station”.

His words: “Together, we can stop criminally minded elements from perpetrating heinous crimes in the state.

“To this end, the Commissioner of Police reaffirms the Command’s unalloyed determination to enhance the overall safety, security, and well-being of Imo people, for the economic growth and prosperity of our dear state.”

Onuimo sole administrator condemns killing

The Sole Administrator of Onuimo local government area of Imo State, Mr. Emeka Obi, has condemned the killing of seven cabinet members of the traditional ruler of Umucheke Okwe, an autonomous community.

Obi, who described the killing as “senseless and dastardly, also said “it was perpetuated by devil incarnates and heartless fellows.”

He recalled with grief that more than eight cabinet members of the traditional council were having a meeting around 4 pm, at the residence of the former president general of the autonomous community, Mr Christian Onyeahala, when some unidentified armed men, some of them putting on face masks, invaded the place and rained bullets on all.

Obi said: “They did not only kill the current President-General of the autonomous community, Mr. Hyginus Ohazirike, also known as Pangason, and other six, but also went ahead and set a good number of the deceased ablaze.

“The only survivor, Mr. Geofrey Ariwodor (aka Agazuo), a renowned Master of Ceremony, is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.”

The sole administrator later sued for calm and called on the security operatives on the ground to take charge

He then made arrangements for the treatment of some others hit by stray bullets during the attack.
He also addressed a large crowd at Umunna roundabout, where he charged them to remain calm and peaceful while promising that the security operatives were already tackling the matter and that in no distant time, those behind the dastardly act would be brought to book.
