Edo guber: Why APC members fumed over Obaseki’s presence at INEC office

Members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, gathered outside the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, office around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, demanding that Governor Godwin Obaseki vacate the premises, arguing he should not be present before the announcement of results.

Reports indicated that the governor entered the INEC office on Aduwawa Road, Benin City, under the cover of darkness and proceeded to sit near the Edo REC’s office where the results were being collated.

Leading the protest, APC’s deputy governorship candidate, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, voiced his demands from outside the gate, insisting that the governor had no reason to be at the office.

He said, “Obaseki must come out. He is not supposed to be here. He is not an INEC Staff. Nigeria Police should not compromise.”

The protesters made several attempts to gain access to the INEC premises, banging on the gate repeatedly, but security personnel prevented their entry.

Amid the commotion, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in charge of the election, Frank Mba, arrived with his team and went directly to where Governor Obaseki was seated.

Recall that allnews.ng had reported that a tensed situation unfolded this morning when Governor Godwin Obaseki was escorted out of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, premises in Benin by Deputy Inspector General, DIG, of Police, Frank Mba.

Governor Obaseki reportedly entered the premises at approximately 2 a.m., unannounced, allegedly to express concerns over perceived irregularities in the collation of results from certain local government areas, including his own, Oredo.
