2027: PDP Group reveals why party leaders pushing for Damagum’s removal

The Concerned PDP League (CPDPL), a faction within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has claimed that the drive to oust acting National Chairman Ambassador Umar Damagum is fueled by the 2027 presidential ambitions of some party leaders.

In a statement signed by National Secretary Alhaji Tasiu M. Muhammed and acting Director of Publicity & Communication Comrade Justina D. Dashi, the group alleged that former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, both seen as potential presidential candidates, view Damagum’s leadership as a threat to their ambitions.

According to the CPDPL, Atiku is concerned about his chances of securing the 2027 presidential ticket, following the exit of his political ally, former PDP National Chairman Senator Iyorchia Ayu.

Governor Bala Mohammed, who also has presidential aspirations, reportedly believes Damagum’s continued leadership could jeopardize his prospects, as both are from the North East.

The group also alleged that Damagum is being pressured to suspend Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike.

However, they stated that Damagum’s position is supported by sections 47(6), 35(3c), and 45(2) of the PDP constitution.

The CPDPL urged Damagum not to yield to intimidation and to continue focusing on stabilizing and uniting the party, warning against calls for a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting as a pressure tactic.

“This is all about the 2027 presidential ambitions,” the group stated.
