UK-based Nigerian cancels wedding over N3.5m bride price list
A Nigerian man living in the United Kingdom has reportedly ended his engagement after receiving a bride price list from his fiancée’s family approximately N3.5 million.
The list, which included items such as livestock, drinks, clothing, and cash payments, was deemed excessive and unsustainable by the man, leading to the cancellation of the planned wedding.
The story was shared on social media by a user, Princess Adeola, who revealed that the man had been deeply invested in the relationship and had plans to sponsor his fiancée’s education and bring her to live with him abroad.
However, he was devastated when his fiancée sided with her family’s demands, attributing them to the tough economic climate in Nigeria.
Adeola wrote, “He genuinely loved her and had plans to secure her future, but when he saw the bride price list, he was shocked. He couldn’t believe she supported such demands, citing Nigeria’s rising costs.”
Feeling betrayed, the man likened the situation to “selling a child” and questioned how a marriage could thrive when it begins with such financial pressures. He decided to break off the engagement, expressing disappointment that his intentions to invest in her future were overlooked in favor of monetary expectations.
Adeola noted, “He felt the demands turned marriage into a transactional agreement, which he wasn’t willing to accept. Though heartbroken, he’s decided to move on and cut ties with her.”
The incident has sparked debates on social media about cultural traditions and the financial strain some practices place on relationships. Adeola blamed the excessive demands and the fiancée’s lack of advocacy for understanding, which ultimately cost them the chance to build a meaningful future together.
This situation has reignited discussions about balancing cultural expectations with practicality in modern relationships.
