Tinubu tasks researchers on solutions to country’s challenges

President Bola Tinubu has called on researchers in all higher institutions and research institutes across the country to proffer solutions to myriad of challenges confronting the nation.

Tinubu made the call at the combined 34th and 35th convocation of the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 academic sessions of the Federal University of Technology, Akure( FUTA).

Represented by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, the president said that the institutions were created for the purpose of giving solutions to challenges.

“ The specialised and conventional universities, research institutes and other tertiary institutions in our country were established as solution-providers and problem-solvers to all our local and national problems.

“Our tertiary and research institutions are much more relevant at this time.

“ The present economic situation in our country requires our institutions to join our efforts towards giving better life to our people and making for ourselves a prosperous nation.

“The government is expecting homegrown solutions to our common problems.

“ I encourage all our researchers to bring up their research outputs that will improve the well-being of our people,” he said.

Tinubu also called on organised private sector to collaborate with research institutions with a view to developing and replicating research outputs for the benefits of citizens and improvement of the economy.

According to him, there is need to intensify the training of students especially for enterprise, in order to move the nation forward.

The subsidies were meant to support the poor and make life better for allNigerians. We are all aware of the fact that the poor and average Nigerians were the sufferers of what was supposed to give them succour and improved standard of living.
He said that his administration took the bold decision to remove fuel subsidies in order to salvage the future of the country.

The president added that the move would bring back the country from the brink of collapse and also unify the exchange rates.

The president said that the administration was not relenting in its pursuit of making the country a haven of prosperity for all where everybody would matter.

Tinubu said that it was disheartening that intellectuals and experts on whom the nation had massively invested huge resources to train in the interest of the country were migrating overseas in large numbers at a time their services were needed.

Many of our youths have chosen the supposed easy option of emigrating to the proverbial greener pastures where their citizens had rolled up their sleeves to bring their nations back from the brinks in their times of trouble.

“Such inclination has led to the brain drain syndrome that we now experience in all areas of our endeavours as a nation,”he said.

He implored all the unions in the country’s universities to resist every attempt to manipulate and disrupt academic calendar, promising that the current administration would take as priority well-being and wellness of all stakeholders.

The president tasked the graduands to see their certification as a means of bringing about a new order in the society.

“ Your newly acquired status and skills are what the society needs to bring about the much desired socio-economic and educational re-engineering necessary to reposition our country in the comity of nations,” he said.

Tinubu said that his administration was committed to restoring the lost glory of the Nigerian educational system devoid of industrial unrest occasioned by students’ and staff unions’ protests and strikes.

He asked stakeholders to join hands with his administration to ensure that there was a university system that was not only stable but also progressive to the admiration of all.

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of FUTA, Prof. Adenike Oladiji, said that a total of 1,280 students were conferred with postgraduate certificates.

Oladiji added that 180 students were certified on the Philosophy of Doctor( PhD), 756 students were certified on the Masters while 344 students were certified on the carpet of Postgraduate Diploma.

She said that a total of 6,405 were conferred with degree certificates on Friday.

According to the vice chancellor, excellence has been the hallmark of FUTA having its staff and students make headway in various academic fora and researches.

The vice chancellor said the institution had witnessed steady progress in all its obligations of teaching, research and community service.

She thanked the president for the approval of the take-off of FUTA Teaching Hospital, extending the appreciation to Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa for allowing the institution to be using the state’s Specialist Hospital for its medicine students.

Prof. Daniel Kolawole Olukoya, the General Overseer and Founder of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, Mr Joel Ogunsola, an ICT expert and Mr Ayorinde Ogunruku were honoured with doctoral degrees.
