The Kaduna State Government has intervened in a case of extreme child abuse involving a 7-year-old boy, Abubakar Sani, whose legs are set to be amputated after sustaining severe injuries allegedly inflicted by his father.
According to officials, the incident occurred in Lere Local Government Area, where the boy’s father, identified as Sani Tanimi Maishago, reportedly tied his son’s legs and poured hot water on them as punishment for allegedly stealing biscuits.
The injuries were left untreated, resulting in severe infection and tissue damage.
Commissioner for Human Services and Social Development, Rabi Salisu, disclosed on Wednesday that by the time the case was reported to the ministry about nine days ago, the boy’s legs had deteriorated to the point of rotting, with maggots present. Medical professionals recommended a double amputation below the knee to save his life.
Further investigation revealed that Abubakar was confined to a room for over 20 days without adequate food by his father and stepmother.
Both individuals have been arrested by the police and are expected to face criminal charges once investigations are concluded.
Salisu reiterated the state’s firm stance against child abuse, domestic violence, and any form of maltreatment, affirming that justice would be pursued to serve as a deterrent to others.
The Chief Medical Director of Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, Dr. Abdulkadir Musa, stated that the boy’s long-term wellbeing would depend on access to prosthetic limbs.
He urged parents to approach discipline with care, warning against harsh punishments that could lead to irreversible harm.
The state government reaffirmed its commitment to child protection, with Salisu emphasizing that the welfare and safety of every child remains a top priority.
