2027 Presidency: PDP Urges Jonathan to Run as NEC Decision Approaches

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formally invited former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election under its banner.

Ibrahim Abdullahi, the party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, emphasized the PDP’s desire for Jonathan’s return, highlighting his legacy and the party’s contributions to Nigeria’s development.

“Jonathan’s return would signify a renewed commitment to national progress. Figures like Jonathan, alongside other notable names such as Dora Akunyili, Okonjo-Iweala, and Akinwunmi Adesina, represent the pride of the PDP’s achievements,” Abdullahi said.

He also cautioned Jonathan against the “hypocrisy” of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), referencing how some individuals who once criticized him are now offering praise. Abdullahi urged him to remain wary of such sudden shifts in loyalty.

Recent sightings of Jonathan’s campaign posters in Kano, featuring slogans such as “The Goodluck Nigeria Needs—Dr. Goodluck Jonathan”, have fueled speculations about his potential candidacy. The posters, reportedly orchestrated by a group called Team New Nigeria, have sparked conversations about his possible return to the political scene.

Speculation around Jonathan’s candidacy also stems from reports that influential northern political figures are urging him to join the race. Advocates argue that he remains eligible for a single four-year term, having previously served as president from 2011 to 2015. Dissatisfaction with the leadership of President Bola Tinubu has further bolstered calls for his return.

The potential return of Jonathan has intensified discussions about other prominent opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar.

Meanwhile, the PDP’s future will be shaped by its upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, scheduled for February 2025. The meeting is expected to address critical issues such as leadership and ongoing internal litigation.

Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, who chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum, has instructed the party’s National Working Committee to prioritize the NEC meeting. However, internal sources cite logistical challenges and conflicting agendas as reasons for delays.

One insider stated, “The NEC meeting is crucial for determining the party’s direction. Whether it holds or not will have lasting implications.”

Diran Odeyemi, the PDP’s immediate past Deputy National Publicity Secretary, attributed the delays to unresolved internal tensions. He called for unity within the party, warning that rushing the NEC meeting could lead to further crises.

“If we cannot manage our internal affairs as a political party, how can we expect to manage the country?” Odeyemi remarked.
