Akpabio Criticizes Governor Fubara Over Political Crisis in Rivers State
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has openly criticized Rivers State Governor Siminialayi Fubara and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for their inability to address the ongoing political tensions in the state.
Akpabio, speaking during the birthday celebration of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, in Port Harcourt on Friday, questioned Fubara’s leadership and his failure to manage relationships with state lawmakers.
As the Special Guest of Honour, Akpabio remarked on the governor’s struggles to gain the support of assembly members loyal to Wike. Drawing from his tenure as Akwa Ibom State governor, Akpabio highlighted the critical role of fostering strong ties with the legislature.
“During my time as governor, my focus was always on maintaining a close relationship with the House of Assembly, especially the Speaker. A governor who fails to manage the legislature effectively exposes himself politically,” Akpabio said.
He further criticized Fubara’s inability to leverage the state’s resources to resolve disputes with lawmakers, suggesting it was a strategic shortcoming. Akpabio also decried what he described as a “culture of betrayal” in Nigerian politics, which he argued undermines good governance and leadership continuity.
“Good governance is impossible when successors are preoccupied with undoing their predecessors’ achievements,” Akpabio said. “Leadership is about continuity and building on existing progress.”
The event, organized by NEW Associates, a political group named after Wike’s initials, also featured a lecture by House Majority Leader Prof. Julius Ihonvbere. Akpabio, however, criticized the lecture for omitting key discussions on sustainable governance.
In his response, Wike dismissed criticisms of his leadership, affirming his commitment to tangible achievements. He stressed that detractors would not derail his focus.
“My priority is delivering results that make Nigerians proud,” Wike said. “The best way to silence critics is through performance.”
Wike also expressed gratitude for the support he receives from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, emphasizing his commitment to development projects in the FCT. “Politics will come later, but for now, my focus is delivering impactful governance,” he concluded.
