ASUP Suspends Two-Week Strike, Directs Members to Resume Work
The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has called off its two-week-long nationwide strike. The suspension was announced on Saturday, December 14, in a statement signed by the union’s president, Shammah Kpanja.
The union directed its members to return to work starting Monday, December 16, 2024.
According to Kpanja, the decision to suspend the strike followed the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federal Government during a conciliation meeting with the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment on December 9.
The strike, which began on December 2, was prompted by the government’s failure to meet the union’s demands. However, Kpanja noted that the recent agreement provides a basis for progress, with the union’s National Executive Council set to review the situation after the meeting.
He added that a follow-up meeting has been scheduled for January 23, 2025, to assess the level of compliance with the agreed terms and address any outstanding issues raised by the union.
“In view of this development, all members of the union are directed to resume duties from Monday, December 16, 2024,” Kpanja said.
