Fire Razes Ibadan Church During Vigil, Worshippers Trapped
A fire outbreak on Friday night gutted a parish of the Christ Apostolic Church in Ibadan, Oyo State, trapping several worshippers inside.
The incident occurred at around 9:30 p.m. at Wisdom Estate, Road 1G, Olohunda Road, in the Lagelu Local Government Area, according to sources who spoke to PUNCH Online on Saturday.
Eyewitnesses reported that the church was holding a Friday vigil when the blaze erupted.
“The fire started around 9:30 p.m. Some worshippers, who had dozed off to rest before the vigil, were caught unawares,” a source said.
Another witness described the distressing scene: “There was an elderly woman inside, so frail that she couldn’t move properly. She was still trapped as the fire raged.”
A church member, who preferred to remain anonymous, confirmed that people were inside the church during the fire, but refrained from giving further details, saying, “I will get back to you later.”
The cause of the fire remains unknown at the time of this report.
The General Manager of Oyo State Fire Services, Akinyemi Akinyinka, confirmed the incident, stating that his team responded to an alert raised by one Kunle Junaid. He assured the public that more information would be provided as investigations progress.
