Ondo Court Sentences 62-Year-Old Ex-Cultist to Death for Murder
The Ondo State High Court in Akure has sentenced Michael Oladun, a 62-year-old former cultist, to death by hanging for the murder of a 67-year-old man, Enikanoselu Ogunmusire.
Oladun, also known as “Miki Jaga,” was a notorious figure linked to cult activities during his time at the Ondo State University, Ado-Ekiti (now Ekiti State University). Reports revealed that he spent eight years completing a four-year course due to his involvement in cult-related activities.
The incident leading to the conviction occurred on May 2, 2020, in Okitipupa, Ondo State. According to court proceedings, Oladun stabbed Ogunmusire multiple times with a broken bottle during an altercation over a land dispute.
Justice Yemi Fasanmi, delivering the judgment on Friday, ruled that the prosecution had proven the case of murder beyond reasonable doubt. The court rejected the defense’s claim that Ogunmusire’s death resulted from injuries sustained in a fall while drunk.
Witness testimonies, including those of the victim’s widow and brother, established that Oladun attacked Ogunmusire after a disagreement over the encroachment and payment for a piece of land.
Dr. O.E. Pelemo, a medical expert, presented an autopsy report confirming that the victim suffered multiple stab wounds and extensive blood loss, leading to hemorrhagic shock and organ failure.
Justice Fasanmi concluded, “I find the defendant guilty as charged and sentence him to death by hanging.”
The case highlights the devastating consequences of violent disputes and reaffirms the judiciary’s stance against unlawful killings.
