Amidst a festive atmosphere of cultural brilliance and aquatic excellence, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, alongside his wife, Dr. Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and his wife, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, led other dignitaries to witness the Lagos Boat Regatta 2024 on Saturday at Victoria Island area of the State.

The Regatta, held simultaneously across multiple locations, showcased the rich cultural and aquatic heritage of Lagos with colorful displays by the five Ibile divisions in the State, featuring intricately decorated boats that thrilled attendees at the Regatta.

Rowing competitions, live performances, and other activities added to the excitement, leaving an indelible impression on guests.

The Governor in a Yacht, accompanied by his deputy and some top government officials and guests, embarked on an exploration tour of the state’s waterways, underscoring the abundant tourism potentials, recreation, and investment.

Speaking after the boat ride, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the Lagos Boat Regatta as a spectacular celebration of the state’s waterways, culture, and heritage.

He emphasized the historical significance of the traditional ceremonies and tours that honor the bond between Lagosians and their waterways, urging both investors and tourists to explore the vast opportunities within Lagos’ aquatic landscape.

“This extraordinary event is not just a reflection of our cultural richness but also a vibrant showcase of Lagos’ unique connection to water—an essential part of our identity and livelihood,” the Governor stated.

“The boat regatta embodies our essence and signifies a transformation and revival of our culture. It showcases our unwavering commitment to developing tourism in Lagos through our waterways.

“With one-third of Lagos surrounded by water, it is essential to utilize our waterways not only as a mode of transportation but also as a vital ecosystem for tourism,” Governor Sanwo-Olu stated.

Highlighting the regatta’s importance, the Governor noted that it aligns with his administration’s T.H.E.M.E.S.Plus agenda, which promotes tourism and the creative economy as key drivers of Lagos’ socio-economic growth.

Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, stated that the regatta is a testament to Lagosians’ commitment to preserving their heritage and fostering tourism.

“This year’s theme, ‘Our Water, Our Heritage, Our Life,’ highlights the critical role our waterways play in shaping our history and identity,” she said.

She commended Governor Sanwo-Olu’s visionary leadership in advancing waterways infrastructure and tourism, ensuring environmental sustainability and economic development.

Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka appreciated the sponsors, organizers, and participants for their contributions just as she encouraged the attendees to immerse themselves in the creativity, dynamism, and cultural pride that define Lagos.

The Lagos Boat Regatta 2024 which ended with a Live musical performances by Musical stars that included Niniola, Atawewe, pheelz and Nice late in the night was a success, solidifying Lagos’ status as a premier destination for culture, tourism, and innovation with attendees left inspired by Lagos’ vibrant heritage and its transformative vision.
