Awka — The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 32-year-old man, Chukwuma Obi, from Umuagu Village, Igboukwu in Aguata Local Government Area, over allegations of kidnapping and extortion.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, Obi was apprehended by operatives of the Anti-Cultism Squad in Enugu-Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government Area.

The suspect allegedly demanded a ransom of ₦1.2 million through threats of abduction while claiming to be a member of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The victim reported receiving a menacing message from Obi, who threatened to abduct him unless the ransom was paid into a specified account.

During interrogation, Obi confessed to the crime and is currently assisting the police in identifying and apprehending other gang members involved in the criminal activities.

Reacting to the arrest, Commissioner of Police Nnaghe Obono Itam reaffirmed the command’s commitment to ensuring justice is served and urged the public to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through emergency lines.
